Prominent Jamaican attorney-at-law Bert Samuels who is one of Vybz Kartel’s lawyers has reported that HBO is interested in producing and documenting the artiste’s current murder conviction, and the outcome of his appeal.
According to Samuels, the cable and satellite television network has reached out to him, requesting advanced notice in advance so that they can be in Jamaica present at least 48 hours before the Court of Appeal makes its final ruling. Samuels told Jamaican Reggae radio station Irie FM that HBO seemingly wants to want to undertake a big feature story influenced by the popularity of Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adijah Palmer.
“About six months after the case was through being argued, the HBO contacted me with a view to knowing and getting advanced notice, as to the outcome of the appeal, and they have been in constant contact with us,” Samuels who is a partner in the highly acclaimed law firm Knight, Junor and Samuels said.
“Of course the appeal has taken some time, so they themselves have become impatient. I guess they want to be here when the decision is handed down. Of course, you know Kartel’s popularity in the music world is no doubt the driving force behind their interest, so we are awaiting the results and they will be notified by me, once I get advanced notice about the handing down of this decision,” Samuels explained.
Last week the Court of Appeal noted in a letter to Kartel’s attorneys that the impending judgment is at an advanced stage of preparation, prompting Gaza fans to prematurely start celebrating his release.
Vybz Kartel, along with his friend Shawn Storm were sentenced to life imprisonment in 2014 for the 2011 murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams, who was also a friend of the artiste. Lawyers representing the duo had made their first attempt to overturn their conviction in 2017.
