Vybz Kartel and Skillibeng link up for the first time since the dancehall legend’s release from prison.
The dancehall stars have previously collaborated on a handful of singles, including “Jeezum,” “Bad Gyal,” and “The King & The Prince.” The two artists have been friends for years, with Vybz Kartel naming Skillibeng among the greats of this generation. The frequent collaborators finally got a chance linkup in person for the first time since Kartel’s release from prison in July this year.
The short clip, which has been making the rounds on social media, shows Kartel and Skillibeng in happier times as the Worl’Boss tells a hilarious story of why he chooses Samsung over the iPhone. “Who did say something bout iPhone… oh the manager lady, and me just dash weh di iPhone,” Kartel said before showing off his Samsung Galaxy Note cellphone. “Hear wah now with the Samsung. It user-friendly.”
Some fans pointed out that Vybz Kartel could now be a brand ambassador for Samsung, given his global influence in the music space. “At this point, G fi be a Official Samsung Brand Ambassador and done!” one fan wrote.
Kartel, real name Adidja Palmer, was released from prison on July 31 after serving close to 13 years out of his life sentence. The Gaza boss won an appeal to the UK Privy Council, which ruled to squash the murder conviction. The Court of Appeal in Jamaica ruled in July to dismiss the case despite prosecutors arguing for a new trial. The court cites the age of the case and doubts about the availability of witnesses and key evidence from the original case.
Vybz Kartel is now getting ready for his first post-prison show, Freedom St, at the National Stadium in Kingston. It’s unclear if Skillibeng will be performing at the event, but don’t rule it out, given their collaborative history.
