Vybz Kartel‘s new Alkaline diss track “Close Casket” quickly shot to No. 1 in Jamaica the same day it was released.
The caged Gaza Boss premiered the song on Sunday and by Monday it was the most listened song on the island. The track even caught the attention of dancehall fans overseas. In three days the track amassed over 400,000 views on YouTube, signalling the huge popularity of Vybz Kartel despite being behind bars for the last six years. In comparison, Alkaline’s Popcaan diss “Microwave” was a top tender for days and reached a million views on YouTube in less than a week.
Last weekend the “Dancehall Hero” deejay send a stern message to his former protege Popcaan, telling him that this will be that last time he is fighting a battle for him. Last year fall, Kartel reignited a lyrical feud with Mavado who was also beefing with Popcaan over the summer in what many dancehall fans believed was a case of David versus Goliath. But in this case Mavado who was the Goliath destroyed Popcaan who was the David.
Only time will tell if Vybz Kartel’s latest effort to slow Alkaline’s grip on dancehall is enough.
