Vybz Kartel Eyes First Grammy

Vybz Kartel could be the next artist out of dancehall to win a Grammy.

The incarcerated deejay made the cut of 50 albums sent to the Grammy Academy which will then be trimmed down to five albums that will compete for Best Reggae Album at the 2012 Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

Vybz Kartel critically acclaim 2011 album Pon Di Gaza Mi Sey could earned the deejay his first even Grammy. The album was released shortly after Vybz Kartel publicized arrest late last year.

The 22 track album features several of Vybz Kartel’s popular singles dated all the way back to 2008, including Tear Drops, Best Baby Daddy, Romping Shop (featuring Spice), Ghetto Youth, Like A Movie, and more.

Vybz Kartel will be facing strong competition from several other dancehall stars including Konshens (Mental Maintenance), Busy Signal (Reggae Music Again), Mr. Vegas (Sweet Jamaica), and Sean Paul (Tomahawk Technique).

Other notable nominees include Jimmy Cliff for his album Rebirth, and Toots Hibbert for Reggae Got Soul: Unplugged

The final cut for Best Reggae Album will be announced at the Grammy Nomination party on December 5 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The 55ft Annual Grammy Awards Ceremony will be held on February 10, 2013 also at the Staples Center.

Vybz Kartel, born Adidja Palmer, has been incarcerated since September of last year on two murder charges. He is schedule to go on trial starting next month.

  3. believe it or not kartel is the most famous artist in jamaica. but throughout america most people don’t even know of him. no exposure kill him career. bring back grammy to Gaza. kmt….don’t hold u breath, sure the jamaicans overseas know of him but d people that decide who get the grammy don’t know much about him except what the jamaican media say, and u know it ain’t good. don’t confuse grammy with peoples choice awards.
