OMI “Cheerleader” Top Billboard Hot 100 … End Jamaica’s No. 1 Drought

Reggae singer OMI is at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his catchy smash hit single “Cheerleader.”

The single climb to the top of the chart this week, overthrowing Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again,” featuring Charlie Puth. That single, which is the Fast and Furious 7 movie soundtrack, spent 12 weeks at the top of the chart.

It’s been a decade since Jamaica had it’s last Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 after Sean Paul achieved it with his 2006 smash hit “Get Busy.”

OMI has been gaining momentum with the single since dropping a new version of the video in April. The video has since amassed over 56 million views on YouTube, while the original video received over 174 million views.

According to Billboard, “Cheerleader” climb to number one after the single sold 276,000 on digital platforms in just the last week.

The Ska influenced pop song was released last year and has since been certified platinum.

In May the song “Cheerleader” also created history in the United Kingdom when it topped the UK Singles Chart for four consecutive weeks, making it the longest a Jamaican has ever reigned on that chart.

OMI was borned in Clarendon, Jamaica and is now signed to Ultra Music, a division of Sony Music.
