Shenseea fights back tears in reacting to her first solo Grammy nomination.
Being nominated for a Grammy album is a big deal and the Jamaican singer knows this more than any other as she became emotional following release of the list of Grammy nominees for Best Reggae Album. This is Shenseea’s first nomination as a solo artist and she joins a list of Jamaican artists like Spice who have been nominated for the competitive category.
Shenseea has been a featured artist on a Grammy-nominated album before having collaborated with artist Ye, formerly Kanye West, on his 2021 album Donda which was nominated for Album of the Year in 2022. However, the artist burst out in tears as she went live and told fans she has long dreamed about winning a Grammy.
“I told myself I was not gonna go to the Grammys until I got my own nomination for my own project,” Shenseea said while on Instagram Live fighting back tears. “And to know that like you guys know that I really manifested this sh– like am so f— up right now. Am f— up in a happy way because bro I spent the entire day crying right now. I got my first Grammy nomination for my project because we did it with Kanye West. My own project oh my God.”
“It’s so crazy cause I’m happy but I just cannot stop crying, mi can’t stop bawl,” she continues while thanking everyone who contributed to the project. “Do you guys know how long I’ve been waiting for this sh*t? I’ve been waiting ever since I found out that I could sing, ok!”
The “Dating Szn” singer added her gratitude to her fans (Shenyengs) for listening and streaming the album as well as her collaborators, engineers, managers, and everyone who had a hand in the project. The album, which was released in May 2024, features 14 tracks and spans various genres – R&B, dancehall, pop, reggae, hip-hop, Afrobeats, Latin, and trap music.
Born Chinseea Linda Lee, Shenseea began recording music at 19 years old and became an immediate sensation in Jamaica leading to prominence as a dancehall artist. However, Shenseea began to cross-over to the hip hop industry and soon released her debut album Alpha in 2022 under labels Rich Immigrants and Interscope. That album peaked at No. 2 on the U.S Reggae Albums chart and No. 3 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart.
However, her dancehall fans had mixed reactions to the project and appeared to be pleased with her sophomore album, Never Gets Late Here released in 2024 which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart.
In the meantime, Vybz Kartel also reacted to the Grammys nomination news. The artist reposted a news headline with his song “Comet” on the post. The artist is currently promoting his Freedom Street concert set for December 31, 2024.
