Burna Boy Advocates For Lil Durk’s Freedom: ‘Streets Ain’t What They Used To Be’

"No more sliding, just sue your opps to court and take they money"

Burna Boy joins the “Free Lil Durk” movement in a message of support to the Chicago rapper.

The Afrobeats star let his feelings be known in a message on his Instagram Story on Monday. Since Lil Durk’s arrest last week Friday in Miami, a number of his peers in music have been showing him support amid growing concerns that this case could be the end of his career. If convicted, the “All My Life” rapper could be sent to prison for decades or even face the death penalty in California.

According to the feds, Lil Durk is the mastermind behind a murder-for-hire plot to kill Quando Rondo in reprisal for the death of OTF (Only The Family) rapper King Von in 2020. Urban Islandz previously reported that King Von was shot and killed during a fight with Quando Rondo and his crew outside a nightclub in Atlanta in November 2020. In August 2022, Rondo became the intended target in a drive-by shooting at a gas station in Los Angeles that left his cousin Saviay’a ‘Lul Pab’ Robinson dead. The Savannah rapper was seen near the scene of the shooting, looking in distress while talking to responding officers.

Following Lil Durk and five of his OTF associates’ arrest for the crime, allegations surfaced that an informant in the crew allegedly wore a wire in his cooperation with the feds. The alleged informant has since been identified as OTF Jam, who has remained silent amid the allegations. The snitching allegations sparked a conversation about street culture and whether or not rappers can trust their crew members to stay true to those codes.

Burna Boy has since commented on the notion of street code being no longer relevant while advocating for Lil Durk’s freedom. “The streets ain’t what it used to be,” the City Boy” singer wrote while sharing a black-and-white photo of himself and Kevin Hart. “The old rules no longer apply. The way I see it, everybody is a civilian now… No more sliding, just sue your opps to court and take they money.” We should point out that Burna Boy is suing one of his opps, Speed Darlington, for cyberstalking. “Free SMURK,” Burna added in another post.

Burna Boy’s comment sparked mixed reactions from Lil Durk fans. Despite remixing Durk’s “All My Life” hit, it doesn’t seem like the Nigerian singer is getting a lot of love from the rap community in the US.

“Burna boy please sit this one out. Never seen or heard of you in DURK in the same room now you wanna speak on this man,” one person wrote. Another man was more supportive of Burna in his statement, saying, “Burna is African and most of y’all would not last a day where he comes from. Go look up why he is called Burna Boy and see where it’s at. Then on to the UK, many of y’all think the UK soft. I see rappers go over there and their bodyguards get knocked out and rapper goes running Hoods all around thr world fam.”
