It seems as if 2019 might just be the best year of Popcaan’s 31 years.
The Unruly Boss’ 2015 collaboration, titled “I Know There’s Gonna Be Good Times” featuring Jamie xx, and Young Thug, was recently rated number 16 on Billboard’s 60 Greatest Dance Songs of the Decade, and one of ’60 quintessential bangers that delivered dance music to the masses in the United States’. Billboard describes the song as ‘one of the best dance records of the 2010s ‘but noted that it ‘wasn’t actually all that danceable’ but still ‘became the undisputed dance anthem to the summer of 2015’ and one of the songs which defined the decade of the 2010s.
Popcaan, whose real name is Andrae Sutherland, has already featured in a slew of decade end music charts by some of North America’s top entertainment publications including Vice Magazine’s 100 Best Albums of the Decade, as well as Pitchfork’s 200 Best Songs of the Decade, where he appeared on the list two times.
The St. Thomas native was also was crowned Entertainer Of The Year at the 37th annual International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA) at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston, in May this year, eclipsing artistes such as Busy Signal, Chronixx, Damion Marley and Shaggy.
Popcaan also won Album Of The Year for ‘Forever’, which beat out ‘Reggae Forever’ by Etana, ‘A Matter Of Time’ by Protoje, ’44/876′ by Shaggy and Sting and ‘Rebellion Rises’ by Ziggy Marley, which were among the nominated albums.
Popcaan is presently gearing up for the upcoming staging of his Unruly Fest stage show in St. Thomas on December 21 and has been in the gym doing rigorous workouts under the watchful eye of his gym instructor, at the Spry Fitness Centre in Kingston.
Unruly Fest will be held at the Goodyear Oval in St. Thomas. The line-up includes Bounty Killer, Protoje, Agent Sasco, Sanchez, Capleton, Jah Frass, Chronic Law, and Sizzla Kalonji and others.
Popcaan is yet to announce the name of the international act who will grade the Unruly stage this year. At the launch of the event last month at the Triple Century Sports Bar in New Kingston, Popcaan said the international act would be announced at a later date.
The featured international act at the inaugural staging last year, was Canadian rapper Drake. His musical compatriots Tanya Stephens, Jahvinchi, and Agent Sasco, had also performed at the event.
