Popcaan is getting ready to make his big screen debut and already he is getting praise for his acting chops.
The “Stray Dog” deejay landed a role in the upcoming Netflix sequel The Intent 2 and his portion of the film was shot in Jamaica. Popcaan plays a notorious crime boss name Sour Sop who runs the underworld in Kingston. According to the movie directors, Femi Oyeniran and Nicky Walker, the artist turn actor is good at the craft.
“You would never think that he has never done acting before,” Walker said. “His ability is amazing on screen the way he performs, the level he performs like he has don 10 movies. He takes the take and he remembers his lines exactly the same on every take, he is amazing.”
Popcaan is the latest famous dancehall artist to turn to acting to help push their brand a reach a wider audience. Over the years we’ve seen artists like Beenie Man, Sean Paul, Spragga Benz, and Ninja Man appeared in famous Jamaican movies. Shaggy will be appearing in an upcoming Netflix movie due this summer.
The film crew for The Intent 2 flew to Jamaica earlier this year to shoot scenes for the film and the directors say they had a great time on the island.
Popcaan, whose real name is Andre Sutherland, previous appeared in Drake’s 2016 short film Please Forgive Me where he played one of the rapper’s right hand men. Aside from that film and his music videos, we don’t know of any other acting gig Popcaan took on prior to his big role in The Intent 2. So that is an amazing accomplishment from the Unruly Boss given that he had no prior big screen experience.
The film is set to premiere on Netflix this summer. It’s unclear if it will be in theaters world wide.
