Prince rose to music stardom back in the early 1980s around the same time Michael Jackson became an international sensation. In 1982, the singer released his landmark album 1999, which gave rise to the Minneapolis sound. He went on to famously battle the music industry for creative freedom over his music. In 1985, Prince won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score for Purple Rain.
Throughout his decades long career, Prince won 7 Grammy awards and sold over 100 million records worldwide.
