Rihanna was honored at the “Black Girls Rock!” celebration with the Rock Star Award on Friday night. The Bajan pop star turned a lot of heads at the Performing Arts Center in Newark, NJ.
The annual event honors black women who are making an impact in America.
“Thank you so much for celebrating us in a world that doesn’t celebrate us enough,” Rihanna said in her acceptance speech. “The minute you learn to love yourself, you will not want to be anybody else…Role model is not the title they like to give me…but I think I can inspire a lot of young women to be themselves and that is half the battle. Hopefully one day I’ll be raising my own little black girl who rocks.”
The event was hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross and saw Lauryn Hill, Monica, Brandy, Andra Day, and Jazmine Sullivan taking the stage. Some big name guests who were in attendance includes Gladys Knight and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
Rihanna is currently making her way across North America for her hugely successful ANTI World Tour.
