UPDATE: Legendary comedian Joan Rivers died in a New York City hospital on Thursday afternoon.
The comedy icon’s heart stopped last week while undergoing a surgery on her vocal chord. She was on life support, but her daughter Melissa Rivers took her off life support so she can pass away peacefully at the age of 81.
“It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers,” Melissa Rivers said in a statement.
“She passed peacefully at 1:17 PM surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Mount Sinai hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother.”
“Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support and prayers we have received from around the world.They have been heard and appreciated.”
“My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.”
Joan Rivers has a career spanning more than 50 years as a comedian and a force in the fashion industry.

Comedy legend Joan Rivers is currently in critical condition in a New York City hospital.
According to TMZ, Joan Rivers stopped breathing Thursday morning while undergoing a throat surgery at a clinic.
Sources say she stopped breathing during the surgery on her vocal cords and was rushed to Mount Sinai hospital in New York.
The 911 called told dispatchers that they have someone “in either cardiac or respiratory arrest.”
NYPD says Joan Rivers, 81, current condition is listed as critical.
