Are Bajans Prejudice Against Fat People Or Only If They’re Jamaicans [Photo]

Earlier this week Barbados newspaper “Daily Nation” published a story with the these unbelievable images.

The fat girl in the photo is 21-year-old Shekina Walters from Jamaica. The images shows her being followed and taunt by a throng of people through the streets of Barbados.

We would all agree that her mode of attire is far from acceptable, but should she be treated with such disrespect from the people of an island that prides itself on high literacy.

It begs the question… Is this the way Bajans treat all tourists or is it just the fat ones or only if they are Jamaicans?

  10. Unfortunately the dress was inappropriate for a girl of her size. That said, the behaviour of the people was disgusting and they should be ashamed of themselves and what is worse the newspaper ran the story as if it was somekind of joke. kmt

  14. The term ‘fat’ is not appropriate either! I would consider changing the term especially in the title of the story! As to what happen to this young lady, it’s 2011 c’mon this is stupid! SMH!

  18. First of all, this story could have been written so much better. Secondly, this journalistic attempt is apparently one sided and lacks any sort of objectivity, the writer’s personal feelings on the whole affair are apparent, seemingly.

The attire is inappropriate, for a big girl. I add that, because if a slim girl had worn an exceedingly short shorts into town, she would have gotten looks, approving whistles from men and it would not have been news worthy.

The actions of the throng (that is the word you meanr to use), are inexcusable and I was ashamed of my bajans. I can’t defend them for it, because as a nation that thrives on Tourism, we cannot go around treating any person with disrepect because we don’t know if they are a local and it is not right in any form.

  20. Bajans need to act better, I think Shenika outfit is far from acceptable. But that’s some bull we treat them so well when they come here.
