The gay community in Jamaica is lauded dancehall deejay Vybz Kartel for signing the deal.
The Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All-sexuals and Gays (J-FLAG) said that Gaza Emporer signing the Reggae Compassionate Act is a step in the right direction.
Last week Urban Islandz broke news of the inking of a deal between Vybz Kartel and a gay rights organization in Europe. Under the deal, Vybz Kartel will stop promoting anti-gay lyrics and hate towards them.
Executive director of J-FLAG Dane Lewis, said the next step is to hold Vybz Kartel accountable for his lyrics and that any breach would see the gay community stepping up their pressure.
In speaking with Jamaican journalists Lewis said:
“Considering what the act calls for, this is a step, as long as the signature is not just a token. Signing the act is one thing, but it’s important to stand up for it. Artistes should be aware of the influence their music could have on society.” (Jamaica Gleaner)
Vybz Kartel has been tight lip about signing the deal since news broke last week.
