"A 20 years now me no have no phone"

Beenie Man, Vybz Kartel

Beenie Man says he has not owned a phone in 20 years following an incident involving Vybz Kartel and police officers.

Beenie Man and Bounty Killer were honored with the Order of Distinction award in Jamaica earlier this week for their years of contribution to Jamaican music. The two legendary deejays were fierce rivals in the 1990s and early 2000s before forming a brotherhood in recent years. Beenie and Bounty are still very relevant in today’s dancehall despite being in the game for more than three decades.

A video of Beenie Man explaining why he hasn’t owned a phone in 20 years has left fans in disbelief. The dancehall legend says the last time he purchased two “banger” phones it didn’t end well so he just gave up on having phones.

“Alright a 20 years now me no have no phone, me buy two banger phone when Kartel go a jail and then every time Kartel call me, police call me back, so me just no bother have no phone,” Beenie said. “So me just no bother have no phone. Because every time… Seriously, Kartel call me two times. Him call me about something me affi deal wid and me a say alright me ago deal wid it and then the police call me back.”

Beenie added, “And then him call me back again and him a say yow the thing no reach and me a say it couldn’t reach because the police them call me back, and then the police them call me back… at the same time.”

The Doc says since then he hasn’t owned a phone. Skatta Burrell has since confirmed that what Beenie Man said was the truth. “Most won’t believe however he’s honest 100% on this one,” the producer said. This is not the first time he has revealed that he doesn’t own a phone. A few years ago he revealed that the only way to get in touch with him was through his manager or his brother. At best you would have to see him in person to discuss business.

The SIMMA deejay is celebrating being awarded the Order of Distinction, one of the highest honors in Jamaica. The dancehall legend congratulated his former rival turn friend, Bounty Killer, who accepted the same award on Monday in Kingston. “Celebrating greatness with the legendary Bounty Killer aka Sir Rodney Pryce OD,” Beenie wrote. “Huge congratulations to the musical Icons Nadine Sutherland OD & Josey Wales OD and all the deserving awardees who were honoured this National Heroes Day. Your contributions inspired us all.”
