Shenseea is putting up big numbers for her new single “Dating Szn” ahead of her third album.
The song, which samples TLC’s 1999 classic “No Scrubs,” has amassed over 2 million views on YouTube since its release over a week ago. The video features Shenseea dating two men as she explores her options in the dating scene. “A no cheat me a cheat mi a date by law,” she sings.
In a new interview on ZipFm, the Jamaican singer shared that she recorded the song without a beat and ended up going through sixty different beats before settling on the “No Scrubs” instrumental.
“[No] Scrubs is one of my favorite songs ever and we recorded my song without a beat,” she said. “Then we listened to like sixty different beats, and I was like ‘I will know it when I hear it’, and Supa Dups took a shot at it. So big up Supa Dubs for that. So we did that and I said ‘this is it’, so for me to get full clearance on it in just a matter of weeks, I just know that it was meant to be and this was for me.”
Shenseea says her biggest accomplishment in recording the song is that it ended up being totally unique and not sounding like the original classic. “Given that we can put on ‘Dating Szn’ and it doesn’t sound like Scrub was the biggest accomplishment for me to be able to use such a legendary beat and make it my own,” she said.
In the meantime, Shenseea shared that her follow-up album to Never Gets Late Here is “practically done.” The project doesn’t have a release date or title yet, but fans can expect it in the first half of next year.
The Alpha singer is also getting ready to go on tour with Jhene Aiko for the R&B singer’s “The Magic Hour Tour” starting on November 29 in Toronto, Canada.
