Lil Nas X has been going nowhere but up since he first exploded onto the music scene in early 2019. The Atlanta rapper whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill appeared on the Ellen Degeneres show this week and spilled the tea on his relationship status.
When asked if he was in a relationship right now, Lil Nas X told Ellen “Somewhat.” With his rapid success and competitive music genre, many were curious to know why Lil Nas X risked ‘coming out’ earlier this summer. After alluding to it on social media, the 20-year-old rapper confirmed on BBC Breakfast in July that he was actually revealing that he is gay.
As Ellen pointed out, most people are fearful of ‘coming out’ because they believe it will affect their professional career so where did Lil Nas X find the confidence to make such a bold move so early in his own music career? The rapper said he always knew it was something he had to do but was in a position where he had to worry about family and friends reacting to the news. However, the Atlanta rapper says in the past year; he found himself “at a new level” where it didn’t really matter anymore. He only told his father and sister a short while before the rest of the world, so it was kinda like a “heads up.” Nas X pointed out as well that his revelation would also help young fans who will have to go through something similar in the future to know that it’s alright.
The “Old Town Road” record-breaking rapper recently celebrated his debut hit single surpassing the record for most weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The previous record that was jointly held by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men for “One Sweet Day” and Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber for “Despacito” was shattered by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus’ 19-week run at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Old Town Road”. Lil Nas X also took home the 2019 MTV Video Music Award for Song of the Year this August.
