Nipsey Hussle’s birthday is approaching, but there will be no celebratory events at The Marathon clothing store.
Fans of late west coast rapper Nipsey Hussle were speculating whether or not The Marathon clothing store was planning to host a gathering to honor what would have been his 34th birthday on August 15. However, The Marathon clothing’s official Instagram account debunked those rumors on Tuesday.
“We’ve received numerous calls and emails inquiring about a celebratory event hosted at The Marathon Store for Nipsey’s birthday,” the statement read. “There will NOT be an event hosted in or around our store. The events being posted are not endorsed by us.”
Rumors of such an event prompted LAPD to gear up for a large crowd to surround the store on the corner of Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue for Nipsey’s birthday, according to TMZ. Police are preparing to manage a crowd the size of the ones that formed in the days after Nipsey Hussle’s tragic murder. The site reported that more than 100 officers will be in the area, many in plain clothes so they won’t give off a threatening vibe to fans and loved ones who come out to pay their respects.
The statement from the store was the first it’s made on social media since announcing that it was backed up on orders in the weeks after the Victory Lap rapper’s death.
Last month, reports surfaced claiming that Nipsey Hussle and his business partners were being investigated for gang activity surrounding The Marathon store. The LAPD later said they weren’t targeting the late rapper specifically.
As for his birthday, it’s not likely that the store’s statement will stop fans and friends from showing up for Nipsey’s first birthday since he was shot and killed on March 31. The late rapper’s beloved status and personal connection with his community throughout his 33 years of life make fans want always to remember his name. The Marathon Continues.
