Fat Joe and his family are mourning the death of his father, Ernesto Cartagena.
The New York rapper shared an emotional post on Instagram announcing his late father’s passing on Wednesday (February 12). Joey Crack shared several photos of his father in happier times, including a picture celebrating his birthday last year. According to the post, Ernesto died on Wednesday, but the rapper did not share his cause of death.
“Sad to announce the passing of my Father ‘ERNESTO AKA CUBA’ papi te quero para siempre,” Fat Joe wrote. “This has been tough I’m not looking for sympathy just Honoring my dad he’s a Legend in my eyes. To my mom, wife, brothers and sisters i love you and we’ll always be united.”
Since making the announcement, Fat Joe has been getting a lot of support from his fans and close friends, including DJ Khaled, who shared a tribute on his Instagram page. “Send love to my brother @fatjoe and his whole family! GOD BLESS FAT JOE DAD REST UP BLESS UP JOE CRACK LOVE YOU BROTHER,” Khaled wrote.
A legend in hip hop in his own right, Fat Joe calls his father the real legend in his life after previously admitting that he was a troubled child growing up, but his father helped him get his life on a better path. In his biography, Joey credited his father as someone instrumental in his life and career, as Ernesto taught him the value of hard work and positivity.
Ernesto Cartagena was age 89 at the time of his death.
