Capleton was released on a $250,000 bail after spending the weekend in jail on a rape charge.
The reggae/dancehall icon, born Clifton Bailey, was arrested on Friday afternoon following a police investigation into a report filed with the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offence and Child Abuse (CISOCA) police department. Capleton appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Monday morning where his attorney Christopher Townsend made an application for bail. Judge Vaughn Smith approved the entertainer’s bail to the tune of $250,000.
Capleton was also ordered to stay away from the complainant and barred from having any form of contacts with her. The “Slew Dem” deejay has maintained his innocence while labeling the alleged rape victim a liar who tried to extort him and he has evidence to back up his claim. The reggae star says she only made a police report after he resisted her and filed a police report.
The communication arm of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), reported on Friday that the complainant told police officers that she was hired by Capleton to groom his hair on April 28. She went and visited him at a hotel in New Kingston to do her job and that’s when he forced himself onto her and had sex with her.
Capleton attorney, Christopher Townsend, says she is lying because his client is a well known Rastafarian who doesn’t go to hairdressers. The police department continues to investigate the report. If convicted, Capleton could be sent to prison for up to 10 years.
