Tech 9 is dead and hip-hop has lost another real one.
The hip-hop community is mourning the dead of legendary Philly battle rapper Tech 9, whose real name is Akeem Mickens. The full details surrounding his death is not yet know, but early reports suggest that he may have died from natural causes. Premier Battles is among the first outlets to confirm Tech 9’s death on Twitter early Monday morning. “We’re very sad to hear Philly and battle rap legend Tech 9 has passed away,” PB tweeted.
“His work both in the pit and as a co-host on Champion, pushed this strange little scene we’re all apart of forward everyday. Battle rap has lost a good one! Thoughts and prayers are with his family,” the tweet reads.
As news of his death spreads, several rappers have been sharing their reactions including Lupe Fiasco, Joe Budden, Lloyd Banks, King Los and more. “Rest In Peace to the Philadelphia legend Tech 9,” Banks wrote while Budden added, “Not the news I wanted to wake up to… smmmfh.”
