Drake creates history this week when his Scorpion album became the first album to reach one billion streams in one week.
Drake continues to raise the bar every year with every album he released. His 25-track project Scorpion was released a week ago, and already it surpasses a billion streams across all streaming platforms. Last week, Urban Islandz reported that the album broke the single day streaming record on both Spotify and Apple Music by a wide margin. The project received 132,450,203 streams on Spotify on the first day of its release.
Drake celebrated the milestone on Instagram on Saturday where he thanks his fans. “New era. New platinum. Thank you a billion times over (a billion plus),” he wrote. This means that Scorpion is already certified platinum by the RIAA. It has been a while since an artist sold over one million album equivalent units in one week.
Post Malone previously held the record for the most streams in one week when his album beerbongs & bentleys reach just under 700 million streams in the week of (April 27-May 3), Billboard reported. Drake’s Scorpion racked up 750 million streams in the first seven days in the United States alone. The rest of the streams spread out worldwide with the album being hugely popular in all music markets around the world.
Post Malone previously held the U.S. one week streaming record when beerbongs reached 431.3 million streams in the States. Scorpion shattered that record in the first three days when it clocked in 435 million U.S. streams from June 29 through July 1.
With these streaming numbers, Scorpion is set to debut at the top of the Billboard 200 chart when the chart gets updated on Tuesday. Industry forecasters predicted that the project could top 700,000 equivalent album units in the United States alone which is more than enough to blow out the chart. Drake could see another long run at the top of the chart.
