OMI is basking in his first NO. 1 song after his smash hit single “Cheerleader” climbed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart last week.
The Jamaican reggae/pop singer performed the single on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon last Tuesday night. He also explained how he wrote the catchy song.

“It’s about seven years ago I was in a taxi… I was developing my catalog at an underground studio… So I was in a taxi heading to the studio and I had the melody in my head from early that morning,” OMI said. “I was working out the melody in my head and it was so catchy. I love to write from a metaphoric standpoint, that was like my thing, so that was how I came up with the metaphor.”
OMI also said that Jamaican base duo Sly and Robbie and Dean Fraser did some final engineering work on the song before he released it in 2012.
