Embattled reggae star Buju Banton is seeking to have his sentence minimize from the 15 years minimum he faced when sentencing commence later this month.
Banton’s attorney David Markus filed documents Thursday (June 9) requesting that Banton’s sentence be lightened.
The documents includes supporting statements from actor Danny Glover, Stephen Marley and Atlanta Hawks center Etan Thomas.
Markus laments that the sentence is “way more than necessary” and notes his client’s limited participation in the crime, clean criminal record and charitable works which he hopes will be enough to have the sentence reduced.
The Grammy winning singer also requests and acquittal and new trial. Baton was convicted in February of conspiring to set up a cocaine deal in 2009.
Sentencing hearing is set for June 23 in Tampa federal court.
