Turk dishes on what happened behind the scenes with the Hot Boys reunion at Lil Wayne’s annual Lil WeezyAna festival.
Lil Wayne ushered in a new era for the Hot Boys when he brought together B.G., Juvenile, Turk, and himself for their first performance in 20 years. The former Cash Money Records alums took the stage at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, LA, on Saturday, November 2, before a sold-out crowd, bringing back the 2000s nostalgia around the Hot Boys.
Turk sat down for an interview with B High ATL after the event, where he dishes on what it was like performing with his childhood friends for the first time since the year 2000. “When I walked in, it was a warm welcome and [Mannie] Fresh and them was getting the DJs and getting the list together,” the rapper said while adding that the final set list was tweaked at the last minute so they had to familiarize themselves with it.
Turk added that Lil Wayne’s entrance lightened things up after a tense atmosphere with his former labelmates. “Then when Wayne came in the room, we got straight to it,” he said. “Came in, dapped everybody, hugs and it just was straight to the business. And sh–, we sung the songs and it was tense. It was tense. I gotta give y’all the real rundown and not on no stuck up sh–, but it was just a ‘man we ain’t do this sh– in a long time’ type tense.”
He continues, “Everybody just being extra careful, being respectful to each other and sh– because like I said, we haven’t all been in the room with each other. But by the time it got to ‘Back That Azz Up,’ it was the nostalgia and we felt what the fans felt! And it was just – we back.”
Among the songs the Hot Boys performed at WeezyAna festival includes some fan favorites like “I Need a Hot Girl,” “Neighborhood Superstar,” and “Get Your Roll On.” The Hoy Boys reunion eventually went on without incidents and even became a full Cash Money reunion with Birdman and Mannie Fresh taking the stage to perform “Project B-tch” and “I Need A Hot Girl.”
While the Hot Boys reunion has been in the works for about a year, the event was almost derailed in July when Turk and B.G. started beefing online. The feud was triggered by Turk being left out of Birdman’s Cash Money reunion set at this year’s Essence Festival. B.G., Juvenile, and Mannie Fresh performed at the event with the Cash Money founder. We should also note that Lil Wayne did not perform during the Cash Money set, perhaps because he had a solo set at the same event.
