XXXTentacion just earned himself a $6 million deal with Capitol Records.
Some hip hop fans are already questioning the deal and asking whether or not new rappers like XXXTentacion are the new face of hip hop. Billboard reported that the Lauderhill, Florida rapper signed a deal with Capitol Music Group’s subsidiary Caroline worth north of $6 million. The 19-year-old rapper, whose real name is Jahseh Onfroy, has had a controversial career since making a name for himself in hip hop with his breakout single “Look At Me.”
The nature of the deal is not yet known, but Caroline caters to indie artists mostly and the deal is for upcoming material. XXXTentacion has already released his debut album “17” on August 25th. The album peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and is currently sitting at No. 14. The album sold 87,000 copies in the first week of its release, which is one of the reasons why he was offered a seven figures record deal. To date he has sold 313,000 equivalent album units in the United States, Nielsen Music reported.
XXXTentacion currently has a lot to celebrate, but his rise to stardom came with a cloud of controversies and legal troubles stemming from an alleged assault and kidnapping case of his ex-girlfriend. He is currently on a charge of aggravated battery and that charge is more serious since the female was pregnant at the time of the incident which took place on October 8, 2016. Cops took X into custody after the female made a frantic 911 call. The “Look At Me” rapper is also charged with domestic battery by strangulation, false imprisonment and witness tampering. His trial date is set for December 11th following a few delays.
Last month, some excerpts from the police report surfaced online detailing the horror the victim endured during the alleged kidnapping and beating case. That incident formed part of the argument from some fans as to why big-name record labels like Capital Music Group are putting their names behind him.
