Nicki Minaj has stepped forward to clarify her controversial comments about Jamaica.
The “Megatron” rapper got some heat from some of her Jamaican fans yesterday when she seemingly compared the country to Saudi Arabia human rights, while also supporting the #FreeASAP movement. Nicki Minaj recalled when she performed in Jamaica back in 2011 at Reggae Sumfest and almost got arrested for using expletives in her performance. At the time, it was illegal for artists to use certain curse words on stage. She also claimed that cops pulled their guns on her.
Nevertheless, Nicki was fined approximately US$10 for the melee and sent on her way. In another tweet posted last night, the Queen rapper says she wasn’t suggesting that women have no rights in Jamaica, but was drawing contrast to how she could easily get arrested because she wasn’t educated on local laws.
“Ummm for the ppl in the back, I wasn’t saying Jamaica doesn’t have women’s rights. I gave an example of what happened in JA to explain how easy it would be to do one thing wrong in Saudia Arabia b/c I’m not aware of every single rule & be locked up. Everyone knows I love JA. STFU,” Nicki tweeted.
She later added, “It’s like y’ all purposely misunderstand me. Just say you don’t like me and GWARN.”

Perhaps folks were a bit too hard on Nicki Minaj for this one, or maybe she should’ve chosen her words a little more carefully. After all, we’re living in an age where social media is very, and it’s very easy to spark a backlash depending on which demographic you offended.
Nicki Minaj has always rep for Jamaica and often pay homage to reggae/dancehall culture as evident in her latest hit single “Megatron” where she sampled a classic 1990s dancehall beat.
