Nipsey Hussle Gets 3 Posthumous Grammy Nods, DJ Khaled Shares Texts Between Them

DJ Khaled just shared a memorable moment between him and the late Nipsey Hussle in light of their Grammy nomination.

It is hard to believe that it’s been nearly eight months since west coast rapper Nipsey Hussle was murdered in Los Angeles. While fans and fellow celebrities continue to grieve, they now have another reason to celebrate Nipsey’s life and legacy after he scored three posthumous Grammy nominations for the 2020 awards. The Recording Academy announced Wednesday morning the full list of nominees for the 62nd annual Grammys and Nipsey Hussle was listed for three nods, one of which came alongside DJ Khaled and John Legend for their collaboration on “Higher.” The song was nominated for Best Rap/Sung Performance.

DJ Khaled took to his Instagram page after the announcement to share a text conversation between him and Hussle that occurred while they were working on the song for Khaled’s album Father of Asahd. In the screenshots, you can see Khaled sending a snippet of the record to Nipsey with the text, “I’m get us a Grammy I know what it takes GREATNESS.” Nipsey then replied with excitement that John Legend was featured on the chorus. “This record classic bro!!!” As the convo continued, Nipsey told Khaled he was going to take his verse up another level. “Me and my whole team felt the love and hospitality from your family. I’m locked in w you bro,” he said.

Nipsey later sent Khaled over his verse and talked about plans to work together again. The visual for “Higher” ended up being the last music video Nipsey would ever shoot before he was gunned down in front of his Marathon Clothing store in LA on March 31. The song and video were released after his death. “I wanted to share with the world how excited @nipseyhussle and I were while making HIGHER!,” Khaled said inn the caption. “So much love and blessings! @nipseyhussle we talked this into existence! GRAMMY Nominated! THANK YOU @johnlegend for getting on this record! We’re going to bring this one home!”

Nipsey Hussle was also nominated for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for “Racks in the Middle” featuring Roddie Ricch and Hit-Boy. The Grammys will air January 26 on CBS.
