PnB Rock Says Drake Is First Rapper To Add Melody To Rap

PnB Rock is crediting Drake from bringing melody to rap music and fans are reacting.

Needless to say that hip hop fans aren’t buying it, but PnB insist that the 6 God is the OG for rap melodies. He made the claim during an interview with Montreality, where he conveniently forget all the other rappers who harmonized their rap songs like Lauryn Hill, Andre 3000, Ja Rule, Nelly, Bone Thugs N’ Harmony, and many more. As a credit to PnB Rock, he did say Drake started it in his era.

“Drake n***a started that sh*t to me bro,” he said. “I don’t give a f**k what nobody say. I can’t say he started it, but in my era of time he started it. N***as was doing it before like Ja Rule did it. A lot of people was putting little melodies into they sh*t even back in the day. But he really made it to where as though you could rap and sing on some real sh*t at the same damn time.”

PnB Rock says he was in prison the first time he heard Drake rapping and singing melodies on his breakout hit “Best I Ever Had” in 2008, and his first thought was this is dope. “I remember when I first heard it, it was like 2008,” he said. “I was locked up… I was in placement [at] Vision Quest. “Best I Ever Had” came on the radio and I was like, ‘Bruh, who the f**k is this n***a, bruh?’ I’m like, this n***a is the most fire sh*t I ever heard.”

While Drake is a hugely talented artist who is great at blending rap and R&B, he is certainly not the pioneer of that musical art form. A lot of artists before him did it and did it well also.
