Ed Sheeran is facing a whopping $100 million lawsuit for copying Marvin Gaye music.

The lawsuit was filed by a company called Structured Asset Sales, and it’s still unclear what affiliation they have with Marvin Gaye’s estate. TMZ reported that the company is seeking $100 million in damages from the British singer who they claimed copied Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” on his 2014 song “Thinking Out Loud.”

The lawsuit claim that the two songs have the same “melody, rhythms, harmonies, drums, bassline, backing chorus, tempo, syncopation and looping as ‘Let’s Get it On.'” The single was co-written by Gaye and a man named Edward Townsend some four decades ago. Townsend passed away in 2003, and Structured Asset Sales bought one-third of the song.

Basically, they are claiming that the entire song is worth $300 so they are owed a $100 million for copyright infringement. In their legal docs, the company claim that the song and album it’s featured on sold over 15 million copies and the music video received over a billion views on YouTube.

Get this, Townsend’s heirs already sued Ed Sheeran for the same song, but he called that suit baseless.
