Megan Thee Stallion uses her virtual concert to honor victims of police brutality and gun violence.
Proving once again that nothing stops her, Megan Thee Stallion took to the stage for the first time since her recent shooting incident to perform virtually for her fans on Saturday, August 29th. The concert, which was presented by Live Nation, featured Meg dancing and rapping to some of her biggest hits, but the “Savage” rapper didn’t miss an opportunity to raise awareness for the ongoing plight of Black Americans.
Taking a moment of silence in the middle of her set, Megan stood solemnly alongside her backup dancers while the names of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tamir Rice, Freddie Gray, and Stephon Clark, and many others flashed behind her on a giant screen.
The gut-wrenching moment ended with the sound of shots being fired and the question, “Why is it so hard being Black in America?” The poignant tribute wasn’t the first time the rapper used her immense platform to bring awareness to the Black Lives Matter movement. Megan Thee Stallion performance at the 2020 BET Awards earlier this year also included elements of social consciousness surrounding the issues of racism and police violence against Black people in America.
Speaking with NME in July, Megan explained, “Sometimes being a public figure, you don’t wanna say the wrong thing because you don’t want to be insensitive to people or get too opinionated. But I will always say what I feel.”
It makes sense that gun violence and police brutality are two topics at the front of Meg’s mind these days, especially considering that she recently endured bullet wounds in both feet. After coming forward to name singer Tory Lanez as her attacker, she admitted that she did not choose to cooperate with police at the time of the incident out of fear for the lives of all those present, including Lanez. Many celebrities have since come forward in support of Megan and condemning Tory for his violent act.
