Missy Elliott Finally Getting The Video Vanguard Award at MTV VMAs

Missy Elliott will finally be honored with MTV’s Video Vanguard award.

The internet spoke and MTV listened. Fans have been campaigning for Missy Elliott to receive MTV’s prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award and this year, that will happen. Missy Elliott will be honored at the 2019 VMAs and with that award comes a performance with some of her biggest classic hits. MTV announced this year’s honoree via social media Monday afternoon.

Missy will become the first female rapper to ever receive the award that pays respect to artists who have had a major influence on music videos.

Missy took to Twitter on Monday after the big announcement to react to the news. “I am Humbly Grateful to be receiving the MichaelJacksonVideoVanguard Award,” the 48-year-old rapper/producer/song-writer said. “I Thank my FANS “Supafriends” who fought diligently  to see this day come @KidFury @crissles who rooted for years 4 me I am crying happy tears. Thank you God @MTV @vmas am SO HUMBLED.”

Past recipients of the award include Beyonce, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Kanye West, and Madonna.

The ceremony which airs live on MTV on August 26, will be Missy’s first time performing live in over a decade. In a statement reported by Variety, MTV’s International co-brand head Bruce Gillmer said “Missy’s impact on the music landscape is indelible. Her creative vision across production, performance and songwriting is unmatched.”

To say that Missy Misdemeanor Elliott deserves the award would be an understatement, hence why fans have been calling out for her to be a recipient for many years. Missy is the first female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The five-time Grammy winner is also the only female rapper to have six studio albums go certified platinum, with hit singles like “Work It,” “Get Your Freak On,” and “Lose Control,” all accompanied by some of the most memorable music videos of the last few decades.
