The Weeknd To Make Big-Screen Debut With Adam Sandler In New Crime Thriller

The Weeknd is headed to a movie theater near you.

The Canadian singer born Abel Tesfaye will play himself in a new crime thriller titled Uncut Gems, according to The Fader. Created by the Safdie brothers, Uncut Gems is described as “an electrifying crime thriller about Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler), a charismatic New York City jeweler always on the lookout for the next big score.” And for the Weekend’s acting debut, appearing in a film with the likes of Adam Sandler is a pretty good look.

Other big names set to feature in the film include former NBA star Kevin Garnett, who will also play himself, and LaKeith Stanfield, of the FX hit series Atlanta and Jordan Peele’s, Get Out.

The Weeknd was reportedly spotted on set of the film last year, but his camp only just confirmed his role. The movie will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, according to Vice.

Although this may be Abel’s first time appearing on the big screen, it certainly isn’t his first time being involved in film or television. Back in April the 29-year-old was featured on HBO’s Game of Thrones soundtrack along with Travis Scott, SZA, Ty Dolla $ign and A$AP Rocky. The Weeknd also dropped a 2014 single “Earned it” off of the 50 Shades of Grey soundtrack.

Uncut Gems is set to premiere in the U.S. on Christmas Day, according to Billboard.
