J Capri Laid To Rest Dancehall Pays Emotional Tribute

J Capri was laid to rest on Monday in an emotional funeral service at the UWI Chapel in Kingston.

The 23-year-old dancehall singer, whose real name is Jordan Phillips, died on December four in the hospital after battling for her life for two weeks following a deadly car crash.

Her death came as a major shock to the Jamaican music fraternity because just days before doctors say that she was showing signs of improvements following a success surgery and blood drive.

Scores of dancehall celebrities turned out to her wake and funeral to pay their final respect. Alaine, Christopher Martin, Romain Virgo and Cherine Anderson, were among some of the local acts who performed at her funeral.

Members of her family and close friends including her father Kenneth Phillips struggled to hold back tears while she lay in her casket at the front of the church.

“It was actually more like a celebration of her life, because we didn’t want to make it sad,” Kenneth Phillips said. “We were also celebrating her achievements over a period of time. We tried to emphasise a more happier mood.”

J Capri is hailed as one of the most promising new acts in dancehall with comparison to dancehall icon Patra, who saw huge commercial success in the 1990s.

Capri rose to stardom in 2013 and went on to collaborate with the likes of Vybz Kartel, Sean Paul, Konshens, Charly Black and more.
