Mannie Fresh Defends Lil Wayne Decision To Leave Cash Money

Former Hot Boy rapper Mannie Fresh is weighing in on the ongoing saga between Lil Wayne, Birdman and Cash Money Records.

In case you have no idea who Mannie Fresh is, he used to be Birdman’s right hand man and is an old mentor of Lil Wayne.

Speaking with the Star Tribune, Mannie Fresh says Lil Wayne is bigger than Cash Money right now and needs to spread his wings.

“I just think Wayne is growing as an artist,” Fresh says. “Wayne has given us some great albums, but he has never given us that album with like a Justin Timberlake on it — with features where like, OK, this is what we expect from an artist of your caliber. Like you went out and got Cher on the song, because you are that dude. You’re on that level.”

Lil Wayne is taking Birdman and Cash Money to court claiming that the label break the contract when they they refused to pay him his advance for his oft-delayed album Tha Carter V. Wayne is suing the label for $51 million in damages.

“He’s going to get somebody with star power that can bring other people to the table. If I did do a song and I got Justin Timberlake on it, I got Justin Timberlake fans as well,” Fresh added. “I think Wayne is starting to see it in that way. Hip hop can only bring you so far.”

Last weekend Birdman was denied access to a Grammy party hosted by Nicki Minaj. That incident sparked more rumors that Nicki Minaj has sided with Lil Wayne.
