Legendary Poet Maya Angelou Dead At 86

The literary world is mourning the death of one of it’s brightest of all time Dr. Maya Angelou.

According to reports, the legendary poet passed away on Wednesday May 27, 2014 at her home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Dr. Maya Angelou was a poet, actress, novelist, professor, singer, and civil rights activist.

One of Angelou’s most famous work was a book release in 1969 titled “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.”

The memoir revealed her life story up to age 16 growing up in a segregated part of Arkansas while tackling controversial issue such as racism, teen pregnancy, and being raped by her mother’s boyfriend.

That memoir mark the beginning of a long and hugely success career. Although her formal education stopped at high school, she has received over 30 honorary degrees from colleges since.

In 2010, President Barack Obama awarded her the Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian honor.

Maya Angelou family released a statement via Facebook confirming her death.

“Dr. Maya Angelou passed quietly in her home before 8:00 a.m. EST. Her family is extremely grateful that her ascension was not belabored by a loss of acuity or comprehension. She lived a life as a teacher, activist, artist and human being. She was a warrior for equality, tolerance and peace. The family is extremely appreciative of the time we had with her and we know that she is looking down upon us with love.”

Dr. Maya Angelou was 86 at the time of her death.
