Lauryn Hill Begs Judge For Mercy In Tax Case, Explain Why She Stop Paying

Lauryn Hill is facing up to 7 years in prison for tax evasion charges.

The female hip-hop icon plead guilty to the charge last year. She reportedly owes the IRS $440,000 in taxes and fees on income from 2005-2007.

According to TMZ, Lauryn Hill filed legal documents last week asking the judge for leniency on her upcoming sentencing date set for April 24.

The Grammy-winning singer says she went underground for a while due to some very real threats to her and her family.

Lauryn stopped paying taxes “when she withdrew from society at large due to what she perceived as manipulation and very real threats to herself and her family.”

Hill says she will pay off the debt much faster if she is not behind bars. On these grounds she is asking for a light sentence.

Lauryn Hill shot to fame in the mid to late 1990s as part of the Fugee band which comprised of Wyclef Jean and Pras.

Hill left the group in 1998 to launch her solo career. Her debut album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which sold 19 million copies worldwide.

In 1999 Lauryn Hill became the first woman in history to be nominated for ten categories and the first woman to win five Grammys in a single night.
