Troy Davis Execution Sparks Global Outcry

Georgia inmate Troy Davis story will be a lingering one for a very long time.

Davis, who was convicted for killing an off-duty police officer 22 years ago, was put to death yesterday by lethal injection.

Davis was pronounced dead at 11:08 p.m. Wednesday (September 21). He was put to death for the 1989 killing of Mark MacPhail. The officer was shot to death while rushing to help a homeless man being attacked by Davis and others. Several witnesses have since recanted their statements, leaving doubts in the public mind.

Troy Davis case drew worldwide support as he consistently maintained his innocence. However, the Courts consistently ruled against him and the officer’s family says they finally have justice after 22 years.

Davis’ global support came from high-profile advocates, including a former U.S. president, the pope and many celebrities.

The execution was delayed more than four hours as the U.S. Supreme Court weighed last-minute arguments from Davis’ legal team and the state of Georgia over whether his execution should be blocked.

The court deny the stay without comments
