Venus Williams Diagnosed With Sjogren’s Syndrome, Pull Out Of U.S. Open

Tennis star Venus Williams withdrew from the U.S. Open on today (September 1), after she was diagnose with Sjögren’s syndrome.

It was a bittersweet week for the tennis icon, who won her first match in two months, beating Vesna Dolonts in straight set at the U.S. Open on Monday.

She issued a statement saying,

“I have been recently diagnosed with Sjogren’s Syndrome, an autoimmune disease which is an ongoing medical condition that affects my energy level and causes fatigue and joint pain.”

Adding,

“I enjoyed playing my first match here and wish I could continue but right now I am unable to. ‘I am thankful I finally have a diagnosis and am now focused on getting better and returning to the court soon.”

Sjögren’s syndrome is a rare autoimmune disorder that causes fatigue and joint pain.
