Wyclef Jean On Being Shot, “It Brought Light To The Fact There Was An Election Going On”

Urban Islandz NEWS: Haitian American Rapper/Activist Wyclef Jean has reflected on his recent bullet wound last week in the Haiti capital Port-au-Prince and how the incident brought exposure to Haiti’s forthcoming presidential election.

The former Fugee frontman explained that despite the seriousness of the incident, it brought awareness to his country.

“It brought light to the fact that there was an election going on that day,” Wyclef told PEOPLE on Saturday at the Haze Nightclub in Las Vegas. “I don’t think none of you all knew about an election in Haiti until everyone heard what happened to me…It was definitely a graze…The bullet didn’t go in or anything. There’s a lot to the story … The story is about the fact that we had an election and our party is in the lead. It’s a young party, trying to take over the country.”

Haitian police officers last week told news reporters in Haiti that Clef was not shot, but instead cut his hand on a glass. Wyclef reps have since downplay the allegations.
