MOBO Awards Axed Jah Cure Due To Rape Conviction

Internationally acclaimed Reggae singer Jah Cure was removed from the 2011 MOBO Awards ‘Best Reggae Act’ category.

The UK Sun reported organizers of the event removed Cure’s from the list of nominees after learning about his conviction and the severity of the charges.

Jah Cure, born Siccature Alcock, was convicted on gun, rape and robbery charges in 1999. He spend 7 years in prison before his release in 2007.

This is not the first controversial MOBO nomination in the reggae category. Reggae acts Vybz Kartel and Elephant Man were both axed in 2004 in a row over homophobic lyrics.

This would have been Jah Cure’s first nomination from the prestigious European Awards show which celebrates urban music.

The remaining nominees for Best Reggae Act are Alborosie, Khago, Mavado, Damian Marley featuring Nas. Gyptian won the award last year.

This year’s MOBO Awards is schedule for October 5 at Glasgow SECC. R&B singer Jason Derulo will take up hosting duties.

There will be a 20th anniversary performance from the legendary Boys II Men, among others.
