Missy Elliott Drops New Album ‘ICONOLOGY’ & Music Video Ahead Of VMAs

Missy Elliott is back with a new project for the first time in 14 years.

Missy Elliott‘s return run just got even hotter after the legendary female songstress dropped a new project Friday titled “ICONOLOGY,” accompanied with a music video for a new single “Throw It Back.” The video embodies everything that Missy is known for with crazy special effects and dramatic costumes, including one of her dressed as a moon man as an ode to her 2019 MTV Video Vanguard Award. The VMAs will be honoring the icon with the prestigious award on August 26.

“This year has been a tremendous year for me…I am humbled and grateful. THANK YOU for allowing me to smell the roses,” Missy said in a caption as she announced her new album Thursday afternoon. “You, my fans, and God are the reason I am here and have celebrated every milestone with me! So, I have a SURPRISE for you… let’s continue the celebration at midnight tonight… I’m dropping a collection of new songs! Let’s #ThrowItBack to a time when music just felt good and made us want to dance! Sincerely, Dr. Melissa “Missy” Elliott #Iconology.”

The “Throw It Back” video featured a cameo from Teyana Taylor, and Missy spits braggadocious lyrics while reminding us of the impact she has had on hip-hop and pop culture.

“Different kind of chick, we are not the same / I raised all these babies, call me Katherine Jackson / Please don’t steal my style, I might cuss you out / What you doin’ now, I did for a while.”

No lies were told. Missy has been collecting flowers all year, becoming the first woman rapper to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The 48-year-old Virginia native also received an honorary doctorate degree from the Berklee College of Music. As a bonus to go along with the Vanguard award, MTV created a Missy Elliott interactive museum that will be open to the public August 24-25 and tickets sold out very quickly.

Fans may have gotten a sneak peek at the museum at the beginning of the “Throw It Back” video. You can catch her new video below.
