We can safely credited Miley Cyrus for the popularity of twerk and Rihanna for making selfies hip. But neither stars invented the words.

“The dictionary content in ODO focuses on current English and includes modern meanings and uses of words,” Christian Purdy, the director of publicity for the Oxford University Press-USA, told ABC News. “It’s not telling you what the language should be. It’s all about how [words] are used.”

According to the Oxford Dictionaries Online, Twerk means “dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance.”

Selfie mean “a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.”
