Rastafari Council Threatens Snoop Lion With Lawsuit, “He Is Not A Real Rasta”

Bunny Wailer is furious with Snoop.

Snoop Lion, formerly Snoop Dogg, has caught some fire from the Rastafarian Community.

The elders of the Ethio-Africa Diaspora Union Millennium Council also known as the Rastafari Millennium Council has released a 7-page document criticizing Snoop Lion Rastafarian transformation.

10 Dancehall Artists Snoop Lion Should Collaborate With

Bunny Wailer, who is an original members of Reggae’s most iconic band Bab Marley and the Wailers, says Snoop Lion lied about becoming a Rastafarian to sell records.

During an interview with TMZ, Bunny Wailer says Snoop Dogg has engaged in “outright fraudulent use of Rastafari Community’s personalities and symbolism” — and has failed to meet “contractual, moral and verbal commitments.”

The Rastafari Council says loving Bob Marley, smoking weed and listening to reggae music does not make you a Rastafarian.

They are asking Snoop to drop the “Lion” moniker and revert back to Dogg, as well as, issue an apology to the Rastafarian Community.

Failing to do so will result in a lawsuit against the rap icon.

  1. Don Rickles and Johnny Carson

We remember watching the Tonight Show, (Years Ago) when Johnny Carson
and Don Rickles were having another one of their Fantastic Shows
Together. Johnny and Don were chatting about a movie that Don Rickles
had made named “Wasting Away Again In Kutcharitaville”. It was a Super
Terrific Show to say the least, both of them started talking about
Kutchie Pelaez and his World Famous Restaurant called Kutchie’s Key West
Kutcharitaville Cafe. About his Famous Goody Goody Cheese Burgers in
Paradise and how he had been serving them since the early 1970’s. That’s
when Johnny Carson started telling Don about the famous key lime pies
that Kutchie bakes. Don then preceded to tell Johnny that he too was
“Addicted To Kutchie’s Famous Key Lime Pies”. That’s when Ed McMahon hit
Rickles from behind with a key lime pie, all over his bald head.
Johnny, must have been planing it from the beginning, he sure set
Rickles-up to take the hit. Oh my gosh, that show was just hilarious, it
had all of us rolling in the floor for hours. They just don’t make TV
like that anymore. Those three were always great together. Don, Johnny
and Ed. Any-Who, could anyone here please tell me just when that
“Kutcharitaville Movie” came-out? Was it in the 70’s or was it in the
80’s? We just can’t seem to find any information about it. It’s like it
just Disappeared, like Johnny and Ed did. Thank God, we still have Don
Rickles. We remember the days back when we spent many of our days
“Wasting Away Again In Kutcharitaville”. I am sure that many of you do
    too.

  3. At the end of the day we all will be judged. So if snoop decides he wants to be a Rasta then let him be.If you disagree, then show him the righteous way to real Rasta, but don’t condemn him. Now, that’s Rasta! ONE LOVE…

  4. HE DOES NOT HAVE TO DROP THE LION NAME AS IF THEY OWN IT THE HELL WITH THAT PEOPLE ALWAYS GOT SOMETHING TO SAY TO GET THEIR 4 MINS OF FAME.

  5. Joeanne Wifematerial Willock

How long did his transformation take? do u think Rastafarianism is just something u wake up one morning and have an epiphany and then to try an emulate the Great Bob Marley, it doesn’t happen so, it’s a spiritual journey which brings out much enlightenment to which one follows a path. not because people have dreds n smoke weed makes them true rastas but their spirit and beliefs.

  6. bunny looking For Publicity got alot of fake Rastafarian out there since when rasta got a council gtfo with that Got To many people faking it. by the way learn king salsi I history you will notice he was not all that great people like Luther king and followers went to help the poor Ethiopians backing in the day because of poverty and starvation at a all time high. Snoopy don’t need no one permission to be a raster because it got a tons of fake rasta out there.

  7. Jah Rastafarie himself would not approve of Snoop Dog becoming a true Rastafarian unless he was in fact, able and willing to act as one. If he’s really a rastafarian, he will turn his riches into charities and enhance the movements for peace as well as join together with other peace makers of the world. That would be the true Rasta way.

  8. while rasta is a way of living, bunny nor any man should’nt… prohibit any man from coming to rasta.. many roads can lead a man to the most high. while snoop hasn’t been involved that long… rastas preaching to the choir are not expanding the body of rasta. snoop is a leader of a lost generation…. and now that he has found a calling… we should let him answer. I have known snoop dogg and his mgr. kevin for ever a decade… and his calling is genuine. he has mislead many down the wrong path… and he is trying to the best of his ability to rectify it. more than I can say for most? snoop has the ability to reach people bunny cannot… and if he leads them back to rasta… why should any man have a problem with it? the truth is not limited to the self righteous. many have been chosen… few have answered. snoop is a hip hop icon with fans from 6-80 dumb crippled and crazy. bob himself.. made secualr music in the 60’s and it led him to the greatness he has achieved…i infact would argue his commercial music led me to his soulful music…. here in america. if u are a true rasta u will know.. that there is only one judge…. that matters… and his name is not bunny or nor council there of…. e.z. now!

Its not the how, its the way. There are hundreds of thousands, if not millions of Rasatafari brethren and sistren taking on the culture all over the world with no scrutiny, so then there must be something of significance why Snoop is being so scrutinized. There is a saying in Jamaica that says ‘the higher the monkey climb the more him exposed’. So if you as a multi millionaire gangsta rapper engage a world wide media company to take a film clip of your conversion to Rastafari that automatically falls into the contractual category of filming the holy sacred sites of the Nyahbinghi Order and so has to abide by the rules and regulations of that process of filming and exploitation, that you through your introductory approach and documentation present, then go on to breech those contractual terms, then this is the result. So this is not about the personal choice of being a Rastafari, this is about the hyper public and exploitation platform that has been chosen to identify to the global market that you are now a part of this community.

So as one of the examples of beginner missteps, when you are given the spiritual name ‘Berhane’ by the HIgh Priest of the Nyahbinghi Order, he does not expect for you to turn around and turn it into a logo with three dancehall women in the center. He expects it to be a private name that you meditate on the highest non-babylon realms. So the mistakes that are being made are playing out on CNN, BET, TWITTER, FACEBOOK ETC. ETC. and exposing the community’s highest moral authority, which is the Nyahbinghi Ancient Council to ridicule in front of the global Rastafari community!

Then they do not expect your now high multi media global conversion dismissing and burying the Gangsta Rappa environment of urban america to come to Jamaica and your first step is to produce and promote a ‘Noisey Jamaica’ film project executive produced by.
SNOOP LION promoting the ‘Gaza Emperor’ the head of the ‘gangsta dancehall’ environment! This incorporating your ‘Reincarnated’ self.

Then privately communication is sent to you for 11 months, since you ‘reincarnated’ to speak to the Elders and you send your managers instead, which insults the personal responsibility wrapped in the student disrespecting his teacher, who in the Rastafari way wants to reason.

It is these very public mis steps that is creating these waves, so a RESET button has to be pressed!

I think the US needs to ban Rastas because they may own weapons of ma$$ destruction such as a AR15 or extended mag.

  12. Datsnot Polite

  13. Reading these peoples comments is hilarious. I like Snoop and I respect the Rasta community but I’m no Rasta. Snoop can call himself Snoop Lion but I highly believe he is not a Rasta. If he follows the way of life as a Rasta then I can see that but like one person said, smoking weed and liking Bob don’t make you one. Reggae and the Rasta community don’t need Snoop. For all who commenting about how Rasta and reggae go together and this and that, kill your ignorance and learn what true Rastafarian is all about.

  14. He should just go back to being Snoop Dogg.

Sounds like a money motive to me it’s one thing to say such and such is not Rasta it’s quite another to sue in court for what?I could see if it was the Twelve Tribes saying this as far as if Snoop Lion said he was in their organization and he was not but to sue for not fulfilling contractual agreements means it’s about business not being a Rasta. There is no centralized movement organization like the Catholic Church with one central figure like the Pope so it seems that mr Wailer and his council made some bad business decision and is trying to

If a contract is signed and there is a breach, where is this breach to be adjudicated?. The bad business decision was made by Snoop.

Well he came and explained that as an artist with a world wide brand and image he wanted to clean up that image and become a better brand and create better products using the image of the Rastafari! The Rastafari Community is forced like Indigenous communities all over the world that were not interested in global commerce to be protecting their Traditional Knowledge And Expressions. This is not some personal Rastafari thing, this is a new level of global exploitation that the United Nations and The World Intellectual Property Organizations are grappling with and trying to protect these communities. So I hope that this is an effective forum and basis for the 7 billion people in the world who are feeding off the few million natural living people and their traditional knowledge without any returns going to them, can become conscious of the needs of these people.

    • Maxine Isis Stowe

Snoop should truly be working on behalf of the Rastafari Community in the manner expressed by is introductory written proposal to the community with his global platform.

    • RASTAFARI AND REGGAE 101

“Rastafarianism was to become the dominant ideology of Jamaican music in the mid-970s”. “The heavy Rasta beat, as much as their philosophy and style of social commentary in the lyrics, led Jamaican pop music from Rock Steady to reggae.”

As Pollard notes, “[r]eggae music…is music written essentially by Rastafari and containslyrics that, for them, are serious ‘messages’.”

“The Rastafarian shamanizes his cultural values in music and Arts” incorporating within them his message from and to his God and King.

Rastafari singers and players of instruments view their roles as a social and religious responsibility. “For the Jamaican culture, and perhaps the Diasporan, this is a new way of perceiving the song.”

Reggae is and has been primarily Rastafari message music, which accounts for its incredible global appeal. “By the time the lyrics of Reggae music reached the airwaves of the world, the language of Rastafari had become an integral part of its
      culture.”

“In the last 70 years or so, Rastafari, a new world 20th century sacrilegious movement that spoke first to the Jamaican poor, has spread not only to the rest of the
Caribbean, but outside of the region to North and South America, Europe, Africa,
      Asia and the Pacific.”

Recognising the unique symbiotic relationship between
Rastafari and Reggae, Neil Savishinsky has remarked that “what is perhaps most interesting and unique about Rastafarianism is that it may represent the only
contemporary socio-religious movement whose diffusion is directly linked to various mediums of transnational popular culture, most notably reggae music.”

“The combined effect of Rastafari and reggae music is powerful”? spiritually, symbolically, culturally and ECONOMICALLY. As anyone who has experienced the roots
of Reggae music would attest, “in many ways, to feel the reggae beat is to think Rasta.”

However, by virtue of the fact that international identification with Rastafari has come more through Reggae than through Rastafari mansions and organisations, “reggae’s travel abroad has also succeeded in clearing space for readings that find artists and fans incorporating Rastafari symbols into their lives and music without necessarily subscribing to the spiritual dimensions of Rastafari

Unauthorised copying and reproduction of Rastafari style of dress, language, symbols and imagery, raises issues about the right of Rastafari as a community to safeguard
the use and misuse of its culture, without regard or respect for it and for those who suffered and died to establish, nurture and develop it. The issue is compounded by the

However, by virtue of the fact that international identification with Rastafari has come more through Reggae than through Rastafari mansions and organisations, “reggae’s travel abroad has also succeeded in clearing space for readings that find artists and fans incorporating Rastafari symbols into their lives and music without necessarily subscribing to the spiritual dimensions of Rastafari
      ideology.”

  52. Didn’t know Rastafarians trademark the word Lion. This reminds me of Morgan Heritage song that says you don’t have to be a dread to be Rasta. Reggae and dancehall artists love to fight against each other instead of supporting and embracing each other. f out a hear Bunny Wailer. Yo vex with Bob Marley and now yo vex with Snoop. Same way dem a fight Sizzla and Capleton.

    • Yo right James. I myself love reggae to death but trying to dictate and intimidate others is a total NO NO….. If this LION word is a trademark then i can also go and trademark the word RASTA OR REGGAE whatever. Does it mean i can now go around suing everybody who uses those words. Thats total nonsense. I used to have great respect for Bunny Wailer but i have since lost all of it. What these people dont realize is that, Snoop Lion can single handedly bring this genre on the world map. I am not lying if i tell you that my own sister didnt even want to listern to reggae music until Snoop Lion came to the scene. Now she buys all sorts of cds, from Mavado, Kartel etc. Snoop Lion coming into the scene will really benefit the reggae artists positively. These guys (COUNCIL) are very short sighted.

Again he chose to make his ‘transformation/reincarnation’ not be a private decision but a public commercial product, that is the key difference and the reason for the reaction from a legal and commercial response.

Rastas need Snoop to take their music (Reggae) to new audiences and at the same time help commercialize it. Whether the Rastas want to admit it or not we all need money to survive.

    • Rastas don’t need Snoop…tru Rastas music is for the people is to empower ghetto youths

    • The best way to empower ghetto youths is to provide them opportunities so that they become economically independent. We can spiritually, culturally and morally empower ghetto youths but if we don’t empower them economically all will be for no benefit. Snoop has done some music with young Jamaican dancehall reggae artists who I believe their profiles have been enriched such that they have accessed new markets, audiences and earned a few foreign currency by collaborating with Snoop. Snoop as a business person and musician understands the magnetism of Jamaican music and knows there is still a lot of unexploited business potential in Reggae and Rasta. There are a lot of renown artists in Jamaica who call themselves rastas who drink alcohol (The Marley Brothers) and use profanity (Sizzla) and yet we don’t hear the council condemning them. Is it because Snoop is foreign to jamaica that we condemn him?

    • Felechia Martin-Holman

Why doesn’t he apologise to our american daughters first and start his transformation experience there? You think it was a coincidence that Sean Coombs was in the island the same bloomin time? You think it is a coincidence that Anthony Miller aired their visit for more than FOUR ER episodes on national television? You must be bloody drunk!

    • Ian Kazanga These are two different topics. Snoop and reggae/dancehall music and Rastafarian spirituality/life. The Council has a valid point to be concerned about how Snoop’s use of Rastafarianism creates more stereotypes around their beliefs and way of life. Yes, Snoop can certainly make some great music with Jamaican artists, but this is not about music for The Council. They aren’t one in the same. Reggae and Rasta do not go hand in hand. Music is simply a form of expression in the culture of Rasta. The issue is Snoop’s celebrity and historical use of weed shedding a negative light on a beloved belief system that is being made a joke of by his actions. Snoop’s actions and displays of him being Rastafarian are boastful. Rasta is humble. IJS.

Unauthorised copying and reproduction of Rastafari style of dress, language, symbols and imagery, raises issues about the right of Rastafari as a community to safeguard
the use and misuse of its culture, without regard or respect for it and for those who suffered and died to establish, nurture and develop it. The issue is compounded by the
fact that, despite immense national and international popularity and exploitation of its traditional cultural expressions, the Rastafari have remained at the lowestsocioeconomic levels of Jamaican society,
a feature that is common worldwide in
societies with indigenous and minority communities.
